Other Treatments

Other Treatments

Other than Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil), many other hair loss treatments and medications work effectively to reverse hair loss and baldness. Some of the most useful medications are-

Avodart (Dutasteride)

Avodart is an FDA proved medication which is extensively used to treat the prostate enlargement. The active ingredient in Avodart is dutasteride which inhibits the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Since DHT is the main hormone that leads to hair loss, its indirect inhibition by Avodart reverse the problem. While finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia inhibits only Type II form of the enzyme, dutasteride work against both Type I and Type II. It makes Avodart more effective and potent drug to treat hair loss.

However, at the same time, Avodart can also bring adverse effects. Since the potency of dutasteride is high, it suppresses the blood levels of DHT as well as in the skin. Moreover, Type I form of the 5 alpha-reductase enzymes is present in the brain and different organs of the body which increases the chances of side effects.

Aldactone (Spironolactone)

Aldactone, the brand name for spironolactone is an oral medication used for treating hair loss. It is a potassium-sparing diuretic which is available in different doses viz., 100 mg, 50 mg, and 25 mg. The drug has an anti-androgenic effect that can work against acne as well as hair loss in women. The two major functions of Aldactone are:

  • Inhibiting the binding of androgen to their cellular receptors
  • Decreasing the synthesis of testosterone.

The drug, however, is not prescribed for men as it may cause sexual dysfunction and breast enlargement due to its anti-androgenic properties.

The dose of spironolactone to treat hair loss is around 200 mg/day. The patient is advised to take 100 mg tablet twice a day. At the same time, it is crucial to keep a count of blood levels while taking Aldactone as it may cause hyperkalemia wherein the level of potassium rises in the blood.

Oral Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives comprise estrogen which aids in prolonging the anagen phase of the growth cycle of hair follicles, thereby stimulating the hair growth in women. However, at the same time, these estrogen dominant pills may cause certain side-effects. Therefore, it is advised to consult your gynecologist and know the right birth control pill and its dosage to get the best result.

Latisse (Bimatoprost)

Latisse, the brand name for bimatoprost is an FDA approved topical medication which is used for the growth of eyelashes. Studies are being made to know the usefulness of bimatoprost for treating the hair loss in men and women.

Viviscal

The active ingredient of Viviscal is glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which is a group of long-chain sugar molecules that aids in making the hair as well as skin health. The nutrients packed in Viviscal supplements aid in nourishing the hair, making them thick, long and lustrous and encourage the growth of existing hair. Also, the presence of the organic form of silica revitalizes the hair and makes them healthy.
